The Reason We Started Producing Epsom Salt

Apart from myself, my family, which includes my wife and children (ages 8 and 5), suffered from atopic dermatitis. Despite repeated visits to the doctor, my wife was only prescribed steroids. Her symptoms never improved after 20 years of treatment. It was as an Epsom salt bath transformed the skin conditions of my family in a remarkable way.

One day, after playing in the sea, I noticed that the rough patches on my children’s atopic skin had smoothed out. This led me to wonder if components in seawater could be beneficial for the skin. I began experimenting in the bath and discovered that neither sodium chloride nor magnesium chloride (in small amounts) had any effect. By examining each component of seawater and using the process of elimination, I concluded that magnesium sulfate was effective.

During a business trip in America, I asked a pharmacist for a product that could help with atopic dermatitis and was recommended Epsom salt.

I learned that it was a common bath additive in the United States and bought two 2.2kg (5-pound) bags of Epsom salt for the first time to take back to Japan. After dividing and using it at my wife’s parental home, it even improved traces of my mother-in-law’s rheumatism. This prompted me to begin importing.

For the first three years, there were almost no sales (with some days having zero sales and most purchasers being Americans), but I continued to sell Epsom salt to maintain my family’s health without atopic issues and with the hope of helping many others suffering from the same condition.

The turning point for garnering attention came when a translated version of an American gossip magazine mentioned that celebrities were using it. Following that, Epsom salt began to be introduced in the media and celebrities’ blogs, leading to an increase in sales.

Our company is committed to manufacturing cosmetics that address the “root cause” of skin troubles, just as Epsom salt did.
